CTV News FarmGate reports that Smart Earth Seeds is attracting new investment interest for our high-Omega meal and oil products derived from a proprietary camelina genetics platform. Investment interest has been sparked by our establishment of markets for Omega3-rich camelina meal as feed for broiler chickens and egg-laying hens – and for camelina oil in aquaculture. Exciting breakthrough markets include the equine and pet food industry as well as for cattle and dairy.

Camelina Benefits

David Roberts Featured 0 Comments

Camelina is a short-season crop: time from seeding to maturity is only 85 to 100 days. Camelina possesses very good frost tolerance in the seedling stage and the full-grown plants exhibit good drought tolerance. This makes it an attractive oilseed alternative for Saskatchewan, particularly in the lighter soils of the southwest. Resistance to flea beetles and black leg disease, plus good shatter resistance, add to the agronomic benefits.

Summary: Camelina is an oilseed crop used for biofuel production. By-products from oil extrameal has potential for use in ruminant rations as a high-quality protein source. In vivo studies are needed to compare CS with other protein sources used in cattle rations. Implementation of breeding programs for improved meal quality is recommend. Summary: Three experiments compared ruminal, physiological, and performance responses of beef steers consuming hay ad libitum and receiving grain-based supplements without (control) or with (CAM) the inclusion of camelina meal. In summary, CAM supplementation to steers impaired forage and total DMI, did not alter thyroid gland function, increased circulating concentrations of PUFA, and lessened the acute-phase protein reaction elicited by …
